What to Do When Your Thrustmaster T598 Keeps Disconnecting
Is your Thrustmaster T598 shutting off mid race, restarting, or occasionally losing signal? Don’t worry. In many cases, the issue is caused by an incorrect startup order, USB connection problems, or the wrong compatibility mode. In this article, we explain all solutions clearly, including an important note about specific serial numbers.
1. Recommended PS5 Startup Procedure
We advise following a specific sequence whenever a T598 unexpectedly disconnects. Follow these steps:
Step by step procedure
- Start the PS5 using your DualShock controller
Power on the PS5 using the controller and log in to your account. - Connect the wheelbase to the PS5 via USB
Preferably use one of the USB ports on the front of the PS5. - Always use a direct power outlet
Plug the T598 power supply directly into a wall outlet (no power strips or extension cables). - Turn on the wheelbase
Switch on the T598 only after all cables and the controller are connected. - Let the PS5 detect and link the wheel to your account
Wait until the console recognises the wheel and completes the pairing.
2. Full Troubleshooting Checklist
We also recommend performing the following checks:
- Make sure your wheelbase and add on wheel are fully updated.
- Always use the correct compatibility mode: Blue Mode for PS4, Red Mode recommended on PS5 except for the F1 games (explained below).
- Try a different USB port on the PlayStation.
- Do not use a USB hub or USB extension cable.
- Connect the wheelbase power supply directly to the wall.
- Test a different USB C cable.
- Check whether cables on the rear of the wheelbase loosen during strong force feedback.
3. Important: Possible Power Supply Issue with Certain Serial Numbers
Thrustmaster has stated that a small number of T598 units may have a power supply problem. This applies only to wheelbases with a serial number that starts with 2513 or a lower number.
If your T598 frequently disconnects, restarts, or loses power, check the serial number on the underside of the wheelbase (or on your dispay on the wheelbase). If your number falls within the affected series, you can officially report it via Thrustmaster:

Good to Know: XXL Racing Does Not Sell Units from the Affected Batch
At XXL Racing you never have to worry: we have never sold a T598 with a serial number lower than 2513. All units we supply fall outside the risk group.
4. Red Mode vs Blue Mode on PlayStation
The T598, like other Thrustmaster wheels, has different compatibility modes.
PlayStation 4 uses Blue Mode
- For PS4 and PS4 games, the T598 must always be in Blue Mode.
PlayStation 5 uses Red Mode (recommended when supported)
- On PS5, Red Mode is recommended when:
- the wheel has the latest firmware
- the game supports Red Mode
- Note: F1 24 and F1 25 currently support only Blue Mode
- If you experience issues or the game does not support Red Mode, switch back to Blue Mode and restart the wheel and game.
5. Still Having Issues?
If your wheel continues to disconnect after following all steps, we recommend:
- retesting or replacing the USB cable
- restarting the PlayStation in Safe Mode and reconstructing database (optional)
- reinstalling the firmware manually via the Thrustmaster Control Panel on PC (available via the Microsoft Store)
If nothing works, there may be a defective power supply, internal electronic failure or software problem. In that case, contact Thrustmaster Support via the link above they can help in ways a reseller cannot.
